Discover the history, culture, and environment of Slab City: an off-grid unincorporated community in the Sonoran Desert, through the eyes of one of its residents in an honest, non-exploitative manner.
From its origins as an abandoned Marine base to the home of artists, nomads, outlaws, and dreamers, "The Slabs" is an ever evolving canvas of human resilience and spirit.
With the options of walking the whole route (2-4 miles depending on optional stops) or doing a drive-along, the tour is fully customizable to your desired level of activity, involvement, and physical abilities.

TOUR ITINERARY
-Salvation Mountain
Visit one of America's most beloved folk art sites while discussing the origins of Slab City and the history of the Imperial Valley.

Learn about the mineral-rich waters of the hot spring, its cultural significance, and the vital role water plays in off-grid desert living.

See Slab City's most popular music venue and learn how live performance fosters connection, creativity, and community in the desert.
-(Optional) East Jesus
Take a walk through the Art Garden where junk becomes art and trash turns to treasure.
-Slab City Skatepark
Explore an empty Olympic-sized swimming pool that's become a canvas for artists and extreme sports lovers from all over the world.
-The Oasis Club
Discover how one of Slab City's original hangouts transformed into a staple for coffee and camaraderie.
-Onion Camp
Get an up close look at how Slab City residents practice sustainability and have a chance to feed the birds at the duck pond.

Hang out at one of the towns favorite local venues for refreshments, events, and entertainment.
Suggested donation AMOUNTS
Varies by group size. Suggested amount is lowered by $5 when paying in cash*, Venmo Cashapp or Paypal directly to your Guide. Nobody is turned away for lack of funds, but donations are highly encouraged to support community operations.

Hydration is extremely important. Come prepared with plenty of water.
Comfortable Shoes
Between rocks, trash, and critters, protecting your feet is vital.
Sun Protection
The desert sun can be intense even in the winter time.
Camera
Unsolicited pictures of residents are highly discouraged but plenty of photo opportunities are available. Please no drones.
Cash
Contribute to the Slab City economy by tipping your guide, and donating to various camps for food ,drinks, and souvenirs.
Optional:
For those looking to explore the Hot Spring, a swimsuit is helpful, though it is a clothing optional site. Additionally, skaters are encouraged to bring a board to enjoy the Skate Park.
